Vintage Omega “Seachero” 2990/2996 1959 w/ box

Does this Seamaster look familiar to you? Probably not.
And that’s actually a very good thing. Allow us to explain before you hit “Add to cart”; In the 1950’s, Omega introduced the Ranchero line. Marketed as a “rough” watch with a “rough”
name, it was presumably meant by Omega to be a hit success amongst horseback riding tough guys wearing brown hats. It was to be the wild younger brother of the Speedmaster (for speed freaks), Seamaster (for water lovers) and Railmaster (for techy guys and gals). An Omega model for every occasion. The Ranchero sales numbers at the time, however, were the equivalent of a train wreck. Our offering was a “victim” of those low sales numbers. Originally designated the “2990”, this watch began its life in the late 50’s as a Ranchero. Being a sales flop, it remained unsold for some time. The Ranchero’s water-oriented brother was a sales hit, though. This presented Omega with a solution for the unsold stock of Ranchero’s; combining the hit factor of the Seamaster name with the Ranchero would make it sellable. And so it happened; the Ranchero’s dial was replaced by a dial with the “Seamaster” name on it. The reference 2990 was then re-referenced the 2996 – making it an original double reference… Thus creating the watch enthusiasts now refer to as the “Seachero” – merging the words Sea(master) and (Ran)chero.
The differences between the two models are however clear; the Ranchero case construction is noticeably simpler than that of its Seamaster brethren. For instance, the polished press-in caseback is simply marked with “waterproof” and lacks the Hippocampus engraving you would expect from the “Seamaster” on the dial. The dial however, not being the original Ranchero design, contrasts starkly with the pragmatism of the case that houses that dial. An applied golden Omega logo is present between applied golden indices, accompanied by multi-facetted golden hands. It creates a fun fusion of pragmatic design, luxury features and a slight patina, backed by an interesting history that also makes it a very rare find.

OMEGA Seamaster

back to 1948, the birth year of the Seamaster CK 2518. The model, when released, was to be a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the company. What made the Seamaster revolutionary at the time was its use of a rubber gasket for its water resistance. The technology was the same used in submarines at that time and remains in use even today.
