Description
The gold-toned dial of this Omega Constellation Electroquartz is clean and minimal, embodying the futuristic design language of the early quartz era. Without applied hour markers, the surface remains uninterrupted, creating a bold and unified visual effect. The dial features a red seconds hand, red date wheel, and sharp black enamel-filled hour and minute hands—an eye-catching and legible configuration. The Omega logo is applied just below 12 o’clock, maintaining the symmetry of this technology-forward design.
The Case & Movement
Encased in a solid 18k yellow gold monocoque case measuring 37mm wide by 43mm long, this reference 196.006 carries immense wrist presence—not only in its proportions but in weight, tipping the scales at 208 grams of gold, which is quite substantial value in the current market. The left-hand crown and broad angular lugs contribute to the watch’s unconventional silhouette. Inside, it houses the Omega caliber 1300—a rebadged Beta 21 movement. Developed by a Swiss consortium (CEH), the Beta 21 marked the beginning of the quartz revolution, operating at 8,192 Hz and offering superior accuracy to anything mechanical at the time.
This movement placed Omega at the forefront of a rapidly changing industry, alongside brands like Rolex (Ref. 5100) and Patek Philippe (Cercle d’Or), all of whom used variations of the Beta 21 in their earliest quartz watches.
The Bracelet
The semi-integrated 18k yellow gold bracelet is detachable but designed to flow seamlessly into the case, giving the watch a monolithic aesthetic. It remains in excellent condition and is long enough to accommodate larger wrists—a rarity for vintage gold bracelets.
Accessories
This watch comes with some rare accessories, including the highly coveted Omega quartz crystal display stand and the original Omega brochure that introduced customers to the groundbreaking Beta 21 technology. These accessories elevate the historical importance of the piece and are seldom found together with the watch today.
