1951 was the year Ferrari introduced the 340 America Vignale Spyder. With its Aurelio Lampredi V12 and coachwork made by Carrozzeria Vignale, it was an incredibly elegant model with specifications to match the imposing exterior look of the car. Around the same time, Omega introduced this “2608-5”. Not a V12 sports car, but a 35.5 mm automatic watch. Like the Ferrari though, it matches a beautiful exterior with impressive features from under the bonnet. This watch of around 70 years old is powered by the Omega cal. 283, which was developed by Omega to be antimagnetic and originally had a power reserve of about 45 hours. It makes the lumed syringe hands move smoothly over the lemon dial.
Both the lume on the hands and the dial have developed a nice patina – giving the watch a warm, genuinely vintage look. The patina is offset beautifully by the Arabic indexes that, although slightly less popping because of the patina, prevent the watch from looking too “antique” by giving it some youthful vibes. The lugs complement this look, with their distinct look. Fancy lugs for a fancy watch.
